Five Light-and-Airy Ways To Wear Scent This Summer

Yikes! The first and last time I wore one of my heavy fragrances in the summer I accidentally subjected five innocent bystanders to Todd Oldham's oriental. In the hot weather, a strong, dramatic fragrance becomes dramatically oppressive.

Lesson learned: Look for lighter ways to wear scent in soup-like humidity. Here are some of my favorites:

Donna Karan Limited Edition Cashmere Mist Fragrance Body Powder Compact. This is as portable as a solid perfume, but the coaster-sized compact and fat brush make it easy to cover a wider surface area on your body. Dust the powder over your arms, décolleté, shoulders, and even your legs. Yum!

Diptyque Cologne Trio. Hooray! To celebrate their 40th anniversary, the chi-chi French brand rolled out a miniature trio of their subtle colognes: L'Eau de L'Eau, L'Eau des Hesperides and L'Eau de Neroli. Toss one, two, even all three in your bag when you need a lightweight fragrance fix. My favorite is L' Eau de Neroli. It even smells sunny.

Kai Fragrance Oil. Our editor, Julie, reaches for this gardenia-scented oil in place of her traditional perfume, which can be a bit too formal when everyone's in flip-flops and tanks. Since Kai's inception, California girls live off of this scent, and that group sure has levity down pat.

Angel by Thierry Mugler Celestial Hair Mist. Few scents divide a crowd like the chocolatey-sweet, sparkling Angel. I love it, and I refuse to cater to those who don't. But because I'm not a jerk, I'll at least lighten up. This hair mist is the happy medium—the icy notes undercut the sugary ones.

Sephora Dry Oil (pictured above). This fast-absorbing body oil not only moisturizes your skin, leaving it soft and supple, but it comes in so many delicious flavors that they're fun to collect in the same way that Bonne Bell Lipsmackers are. My current fave: Nectarine Blossom.

My favorite warm weather scent is the Vanille Violette from Laurence Dumont. It's kind of floral but spicy thanks to the violet, and it has the perfect blend of sweetness in it from vanilla with a hint of woodiness. The great thing too is it's $10 for 3.4 oz from Sephora so it lasts forever!

I personally like "intimatemately Beckham". It's really sexy, but very light. I like to wear it on warm summer nights because the humidity helps to bring out the scent- yummy!

I'm so loving "star" by thierry Mugler...lots of people told me that "angel" is way better. But I disagree it's just too strong for me. My friend told me that "star" is most likely an autumn scent, but I don't care because it just smells amazing and I feel fabulous wearing it! SO there!
