One of the grand theories that I have recently embraced is the idea
that everything in your life should be
not only functional but
beautiful. I don't mean that you should get rid of all your ugly
friends--unless they are ugly in their souls. What I actually mean is
that details matter, and the little things you use every day should
make you happy: your toothbrush should be pink, if that is your
favorite color; your cell phone should have a ringtone that you
downloaded that makes you happy; your soap dish can look like a fish;
and your cheese grater, with which you grate fresh and delicious cheese
(not that crap that comes
pre-shredded in a bag), can be in the shape of an adorable mouse, like the
grater from Kim and Jason's Lemonade Stand. Everything you own should be as
adorable and cute and as much a pleasure just to have sitting on your counter.
