Halloween is supposed to be scary - but with a busy schedule and a tight budget, your party has to be bare bones. You don’t need to invest large amounts of money and time just to create a spectacular party.  Your guests are coming for the company, not necessarily the over-the-top pumpkin sculpture in the front yard. All it takes is a great theme, a little creativity, and some easy recipes for a devilishly good time.

Set the Theme
Choosing your theme is the most important element to hosting a party. This will help with decorations, menu planning and even costumes. Depending on whether or not you’re hosting a family party, themes can range from a kid-friendly Great Pumpkin gathering to the more adult-themed Classic Horror Films or Pulp Fiction get together.

The Food
For Halloween parties, finger food and easy appetizers are best. You want your guests to be able to mingle and move around. Taste of Home has many quick and easy recipes that are perfect for any Halloween theme party:

It’s a blast to the past with these simple diner recipes.

Decorate the Space

No matter your theme, you don’t have to spend tons of money on elaborate decorations.  For a Great Pumpkin party, host the gathering outside and use your yard as a giant pumpkin patch.  Buy some pumpkins and carve them with different faces. Put a few in the trees (make sure they’re on sturdy branches) and place others in groups around your yard. You can also buy dried corn stalks and other fall foliage at a fairly low price at your local nursery. Use these to help create a nice fall feel.  A bonfire is another fun element that can help add to your Halloween atmosphere.

The Classic Horror Film party calls for a basement or attic. These spaces help create the perfect haunted house effect.  String up faux spider webs and hang candle luminaries for an eerie glow. Cover up storage boxes with old white sheets and shredded gauze. Set up a projector or TV to play classic films such as The Shining, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween.

If you decide to host a Pulp Fiction party, take your guests back to Jack Rabbit Slims, the 1950’s-themed restaurant, where Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace had their famous dance scene.  Use blue, red, and silver as your color palate as you transform your space into a diner. Set up your tables and chairs so they look like restaurant booths, and hang a crystal ball from your ceiling. Create a dance floor in the middle of the room and be sure to have a twist contest and Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell” on the stereo.
