Camping Over Memorial Day - What do you cook?

I love camping. I love being outside, sleeping in a tent (I would sleep outdoors but we live in Washington and who knows when the next rain cloud shows up) & all of the delicious, probably not good for you food.

I do the prep work at home and basically just put together once we are there. Super easy and everyone always likes - fajitas. You can preslice the meat soak it in marinade. Precut peppers, onions, carrots & whatever else you like. Throw it altogether in a pan and in 10 minutes dinner is done and everyone is happy.

So I ask - What do you cook when camping? What are your menus? What do you despise about cooking when camping?

Have fun at your camp out. The only thing I don't like, besides no bathrooms, is having to find a place to throw out the food so we don't attract bears. You could lock it in your car or hang it high from a tree branch. Some campsites have bear buckets and poles where you can stash your food. You probably know all this already, since you're an avid camper.

My first comment didn't post, so I'll write it again:

I've been camping with my husband a few times, always for several days at a time, not just for one night, and we always bring way too much food, so I recommend either bringing food with you in portion sizes, so you don't waste food, or just planning to eat the same thing at every meal, like hot dogs.

    Some things we liked making:

Grilled veggies, wrapped in aluminum foil — you can set them right on the coals to roast or on top of a grill grate on the fire.

    Kabobs with chicken and veggies.

Pancakes on a travel gas grill for breakfast

    And, of course, s'mores!

I'm not much of an expert on what to bring as I am on what not to do. On a remote camping trip I only packed trail mix and oatmeal and crackers for 7 days in the mountains (to save weight in my pack) We ended up trying to fish and hunt for our food the last couple days needless to say we didn’t eat like kings. I for short camping trips I enjoy bringing stuff to cook over the fire with in a cast skillet, chili, biscuits, eggs, bacon

STEAKS AND HOT DOGS OR CHIKEN ON GRILL, BBQ DEPENDING ON IF YOU'RE GRILLING OR HAVE A STOVE INSIDE YOUR VEHICLE LIKE AN RV.

I think the obvious would be hot dogs over the fire. but don't forget you can also make any soup in the camp fire by putting two holes in the lid for vents. i usually do campbells pot roast or beef stew. for lunches sandwhiches are easy served with your favorite tater chips. breakfast is the tricky meal. you could do a big breakfast, but when hiking in like we do that would be alot of unnecessary weight. we will have cereal bars or pop tarts. if you are not hiking in then bacon and eggs is easy. also if you are not hiking in you could consider a dutch oven meal. just go to the store and get a dutch oven cookbook. the best thing to me is pineapple upsidedown cake in the dutch oven. hope this helps. :)

Pre cook a bunch of stuff, BBQ some chicken & ribs at home. Make spaghetti, potato salad, cole slaw etc. Then you can enjoy the trip also and not just be cooking. Camp cooking will take twice as long as it does a home. Then just reheat on the grill to keep the BBQ flavor.

go to www.oneworldonetable.com and use their Memorial Day menu. You can pack everything up for your campout and its all pretty easy stuff. I envy you, wish I could get away for some nature time!
