Can you be successful if you’re a pothead?

Last year, Rachel Murphy, a 36-year-old entertainment industry publicist in New York and mother of a toddler, temporarily gave up her nightly weed habit a week before taking a required urine test to secure a life-insurance policy. (She only smokes once her daughter is in bed.) Hours after the exam, she lit up. Two days later, the clinic called to say there was a glitch in the test (unrelated to drugs) and that she would have to retake it. "I was totally back on this bandwagon of smoking a lot, and I didn't want to be bothered to have to do this again," Murphy says. With three days until the test, she frantically called her cousin, an insurance agent herself, who advised Murphy to buy Ready Clean, a 16-ounce fruit punch that claims to flush out the THC in urine if ingested within 48 hours of a drug test. Rachel paid $50 and had the drink overnighted. "My husband was standing over me the morning of the test saying, 'Drink! Drink! Chug it!' I was like, 'I can't drink that fast.' He said, 'Rachel, this is serious s---. We need life insurance—we have a baby—and we can't get it because my wife smokes pot?'" One agonizing week later, Murphy got the word that she'd passed her urine test.

The white-knuckle experience became a major source of tension in her marriage, Murphy concedes, so she stopped smoking for a while. But it didn't last. "I'm sorry, but I have a stressful job, I have a baby. I need to unwind somehow, and I don't really like to drink," she grumbles.

You can be successful at being a numbed out zombie pothead I suppose. But your kid deserves much better than you as a parent. Because--breaking news you losers--parenting doesn't stop when you put the kid to bed.

She needs to unwind huh, and only does it when her baby goes to sleep? Sure, nothing ever happens to babies while they're supposed to be asleep. Then when the police or paramedics arrive and she's stoned out of her mind, she can claim she's a busy mom who needs to unwind. There are people desperate for a baby who have respect for the responsibility, and there are trash like this that hold that responsibility in such a low regard.

What does a urine test for life insurance have to do with being successful? The answer is yes you can be if you choose to be. I know a lot of people who smoke and have a successful life, it's the same as people who drink. Within moderation there is nothing wrong with it.

Of course everyone jumps to the conclusion that she is stoned out of her mind, that these women smoke all day every day. Did you read the full article? The excerpt above is the most extreme behavior in there. These women do not go to work stoned, they do not smoke the entire night long, they have a couple hits in the evening to help unwind. As the article says, marijuana is less addictive than alcohol (and apparently less expensive). It doesn't cause the same side effects as anti-anxiety medications. And while it is illegal, it shouldn't be.

No, I don't think you can be successful if you are a pothead. But if you are a moderate user who understands when it is not appropriate (ie in the morning before work) then it is no worse that most other things.

And for the poster who attacked her for being a mom, you're right one doesn't stop being a parent when the kids go to bed. But perhaps her husband could be expected to step up if the baby woke up? Don't assume she is stoned out of her mind and don't assume they don't have a plan worked out so one of them is able to take care of their child.

Uh, people just automatically ASSume that someone is going to be a total failure or loser because they smoke pot. That's stupid. There's plenty of responsible, functioning adults who are able to have a reasonable balance with their habits. There's also plenty of IRRESPONSIBLE, NONFUNCTIONAL adults who don't smoke pot or any other drug. How do you account for them?

Its better then drinking booze thats for sure. Its a perfect legal drug if you have a perscrption for it. They are many famous, wealthy, and successful people who do it and it has alot of medical benifits such as helping with stress, anxiety, neasua, pain, depression, sleeping disorders, the list goes on and on. The clean drink she had is nothing but a detox drink. So readers dont bag it until you try it and it is all about moderation, there is definenty a time and a place.

To those that think someone who smokes pot is a loser, unsuccessful or a druggie has never pondered facing life with only Vicodin to address chronic pain. Some of us face pain everyday, from the moment we wake up till we go back to bed. My doctors prescribe opiates and muscle relaxants. Both are highly addictive and leave me hung-over the next day. As a research chemist, I can not be working in the laboratory hung-over. (For that same reason, I rarely drink alcohol and not during the week.)

So I obtained a prescription for medical marijuana. It allows me to address the pain better then Aleive or Tylenol, (another dangerous drug, Tylenol will destroy your liver.) This way, I only have to face a night on vicodin a few times a year, rather then weekly.

I am a highly ambitious person and successful in my career. I worked very hard to get where I am, and I smoked weed the whole time. When I have to quit for any reason, I don't sleep due to pain, and find myself taking 4X more vicodin in order to function. I hate Vicodin and feel like my skin is crawling the whole time.

So to those who judge... Do you ever drink alcohol? Wine? Beer? Cocktails? Well then check your hypocrisy. Alcohol is much more debilitation then weed. No one ever gets behind the wheel of a car and drives recklessly on weed. Weed doesn't lower your inhibitions to the point where you woke up in someone's bed. Weed won't destroy your liver, or leave you drunk or hung-over the following day. The laws are changing, accept it and stop judging people based on your mis-perceptions and faulty logic.

Until you have lived my life, you can not judge how successful I am, or are not, or what kind of person I am. I am your daughter, sister, wife and mother. I am trying to make it thought my day without resorting to addictive and debilitation opiates. I just want to function, work and not spend all day on the floor with a heating pad.
