Repo! The Genetic Opera
Repo! The Genetic Opera is a rock opera mader in 2008 and based off
a play from several years prior written by Terrance Zdunich and
Darren Smith. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman ("DLB",
director of horror films Saw 2-4), Repo! The Genetic Opera is set
in the year 2056 when an epidemic of organ failures has devastated
humanity. In the chaos that followed this disaster rises GeneCo, a
company that provides an organ financing plan. Surgery becomes a
fashion statement, and the founders of GeneCo, the Largos, become
the most wealthy and powerful family in the world.
GeneCo also develops an addictive painkiller called Zydrate, which Graverobbers harvest a cheaper version of from corpses and sell on the black market.
Repo! The Genetic Opera stares Alexa Vega, Anthony Stewart Head, Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman, Bill Mosely, Ogre, and Paris Hilton. But before you think, "Ew - Paris Hilton?" and click away, give it a chance, because a lot of Paris haters gained a lot of respect for her from this movie alone. As the creators put it - Repo isn't a movie, it's an event. Some refer to it as "the new Rocky Horror", but it's truly a completely different phenomenon. Rocky Horror comparisons aside - it's an excellent movie, with wonderful songs, and the best fandom possible. Seriously, no matter how much you hate the movie (which I still don't see how it's possible) you have to love the fans. They're devoted to their fandom, to the point of spending hundreds of dollars putting together costumes and shadowcasts and the like, but they're a wonderful group of people and I can't imagine my life without them.
All in all, I would highly recommend this movie to anyone - horror fanatics, musical lovers, and especially anyone into the abnormal movies, because Repo is far from the norm.
