13 movies that still give me nightmares

I grew up watching horror movies from a young age... with my parents approval. I swear I turned out OK though, and my love of the movie genre obviously runs deep. That said, these 13 scary films definitely made an impression. If you're looking for something to get you in the mood for Halloween, or you're staying in on the 31st, there are the flicks I'd recommend.
    • 1. The Shining
    • 2. Psycho
    • 3. The Exorcist
    • 4. Rosemary's Baby
    • 5. The Omen
    • 5. Carrie
    • 6. Halloween

1. The Shining

My 10th birthday party fell on Friday the 13th and my friends and I stayed up late watching this on cable--so inappropriate! Jack, the twins, the elevator of blood, the maze, "redrum," and the Overlook Hotel still give me the creeps worse than any other horror movie.

Some of those were pretty scary when I saw them but Exorcist and Jaws made me bust a gut laughing. A movie that really freaked me out was The Thing, the one from the '80s.

I had to keep the night light on for 4 years after I saw the Night of the Living Dead when I was 9... today the movie seems dated, but it still gives me the creeps..big time....

Horror films seldom frighten me. One exception: A cheesy made-for-TV movie called "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark". I spent a small fortune on flashlight batteries after watching that one.

What about 'The Hand' (1981) starring Michael Caine? The thought of a severed hand coming to life & going around killing people is pretty scary! And don't forget 'Fright Night' & 'The Lost Boys', two other cult horror classics from the '80s.

As for the movies mentioned by the writer above, can't beat 'The Exorcist' as the scariest horror movie of all time. The 360 degree head spin, the projectile green vomit, Linda Blair's absolutely terrifying demon-possessed face, voice & evil laugh... (shudder)... gives me the chills just thinking about it! I'm also a big fan of the original 'Invasion of The Body Snatchers'. The 1993 remake starring Gabrielle Anwar was quite scary too. Haven't seen the latest one, 'The Invasion' (with Nicole Kidman & Daniel Craig), though judging from the reviews I've read, it sounds like a dud. And ah... good ol' Freddy Krueger. I love this guy. He makes me laugh whenever he terrorizes those helpless kids!

I haven't seen the original 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. However, two nights back, I watched this horrible '90s sequel starring, you wouldn't believe it, Matthew McConaughey & Renee Zellweger in their pre-fame days! Lol! How apt too, since they're both from Texas!

I generally don't find horror films scary. The Exorcist did creep me out though. One horror movie that did freak me out though was "Salem's Lot" - the original, with David Soul. Of course, I saw it when I was 11. Still, even the remake with Rob Lowe weirds me out.

Well, I can't pan ahead of number 7 before knowing if "Child's Play" is in the queue. That's the movie that has scared me like no other. So if someone will be kind enough to warn me of what's to come, I will then be able to decide if I will read the rest of this article.

The other scariest movie I've ever seen is "Event Horizon." My husband and I both agree that that is just about as scary as it gets. Though I don't watch gory, torture-filled movies like "Saw" and "House of 1,000 Corpses," I can appreciate truly creepy movies like "The Shining" (both versions), "The Haunting," "The Exorcist," and "The Omen." "Rear Window" is a great one too.

We always watch "Sleepy Hollow" at Halloween time too, and call me crazy, but I actually like to watch "Meet Me in St. Louis" at Halloween, because of that lengthy Halloween scene. I'd rather have fun watching a movie than be terrified to go to bed afterwards.

Oh, and "Poltergeist" is one of my favorites too. Always creepy, no matter how many times I've seen it.

I think I was too sheltered as a child... I haven't seen most of those movies... I don't even think I have a favorite scary movie.. I like 13 Ghosts (esp the story and the juggernaut) and House on Haunted Hill. Lame I know...

Well now I know what I will do on Halloween! Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Bram Stokera are at the top of my list!
