Chaz Bono: "Gender is something between your ears, not between your legs"

In a candid interview with "Entertainment Tonight" (which aired last night, with a second part tonight) Chaz Bono revealed more about her decision to undergo female-to-male gender reassignment surgery last March. The 40-year-old offspring of Cher and Sonny Bono (formerly known as Chastity) told the show:

"I always felt like the male from the time I was a child. There wasn't much feminine about me. I believe that gender is something between your ears, not between your legs. That is something I discovered in the early '90s. It was just a long process of being comfortable enough to do something about it."

He also disclosed that it took getting sober in 2004 to give him the courage to go through with the operation.

Since the sex change, his voice has lowered, he's grown muscle and his sex drive has increased, Bono explained.

On having the procedure at 40: "I thought it's now or never. I want to still feel vibrant and be able to enjoy my life in a male body and not wait until I am an old man."

According to People mag, Bono loves being a man, and it's true, he seems happier than ever (certainly happier than all of those years of sulky pictures at Cher's side). And feeling happy and comfortable in one's skin is something we can all applaud.

For some reason I can totally understand a transexual person than a gay person, because to me being gay is a disorder where you either have too much estrogen or testosterone or something isn't right and they think it's a normal" lifestyle which defeats the purpose of procreation, BUT, when I look at a transgendered person I can totally understand it and respect it, because of this, the brain is not female, inside she is a HE although the outside is female, she feels it, knows it, so I can understand wanting to change your sex and then going after the opposite sex and living as what you were born wrong as, but being sexually attracted to the same sex, doesn't make sense to me.

My dad is lived a very hard life, talks strangly with a philosophical humor and drinks heavily, but I must quote him for my answer. " That's a mud duck bubba." A mud duck is a duck who wollows around in the mud like it's trying to be a fish, even though it can't be in all reality.

I'm not judging Chaz Bono at all, but there is alot more to being a Man than the thought of being one, the feeling of being one and having a King Staff. I just hope he's right because that tattoo is permanent. All I can say is welcome to the other side and watch your back unless it has already been compromised. Get it how ya live and live what it is.

    I agree wholeheartedly.

It is, however, an idea that lots of people are obviously extremely uncomfortable with. They're stuck inside boxes. Oh, well. Progress, and progressive ideas, happen whether folks want them to or not.

Good for her! If someone has been struggling emotionally for an entire life like Chaz has, then I think it's wonderful she has finally been able to do something about it and is happy with her decision. No one should ever suffer in silence. I hope others follow suit no matter what their circumstances are.

Tell that to the family court system and we shall see if they show Chaz the same compassion they do women if he decides to involve children in his life. When his epiphany comes to fruition maybe he can actually realize what men go through w/o the "I was once female do I get some kinda of leniency?" bit.

Welcome to the world of men Chaz.

Although, as a father, I have to say Dubs makes an excellent point.

And I should also point out that, while I agree that "gender is something between the ears", my idea of gender equality and progressive human thinking means taking what's between your ears and ALREADY between your legs and making them both work for you. It IS possible.

But, of course, that's just me...not casting aspersions at anyone else's decision.
