5 Worst Case Vacation Scenarios - and How to Fix Them

If worst came to absolute worst, your vacation could end up like a Chevy Chase movie - a string of cringe-inducing mishaps and perpetual wrong-turns (“Look kids, Big Ben!”). But even in the event of utter disaster - the airline’s lost your luggage, you were pick-pocketed while hailing a taxi - there are ways to salvage a vacation, be it a long-planned international trek or a quickie weekend at the shore. Check out these must-know survival tips for overcoming your worst-case vacation pitfall.

You lost your passport. Before you go: Color copy your Passport and a secondary government-issued photo ID, like your driver’s license. Write the phone number of the US embassy in the country you’re visiting on the back, and pack the copies in a separate place from the originals - so if one gets lost or stolen, you’ll have backup ID. The fix: Call the US embassy right away and report your passport stolen; it may be a few days before you can pick up a new one, but having copies can expedite the process.

Your airline went bankrupt. Before you go: Consider whether you really want to book with a small, independent carrier versus a larger one less vulnerable to an abrupt work stoppage. If you choose the indie airline, invest in travel insurance. Be sure to print out e-tickets or other proofs of purchase. The fix: Call the airline immediately for instructions. You’ll want a refund, but also another method of transportation to your destination. Find out if the airline has made alternate arrangements for stranded passengers with another airline. If not, try to book standby on another airline. You may have to pony up for a new ticket.

You got sunburned - bad. Before you go: Pack sunscreen of at least SPF 30, plus a floppy sun hat (think JLo). We like La Roche Posay Anthelios sunblock - it stays on, won’t make you break out or irritate sensitive skin, and protects from UVA and UVB rays. Also bring Advil and aloe. The fix: Get out of the sun. Take a cool shower or apply cool compresses to the burned areas. Pop an Advil to reduce pain and swelling, then slather yourself in non-menthol, all-natural aloe vera gel. If you’re sensitive to the touch, try Solarcaine - cooling aerosol aloe vera with numbing lidocaine. Don’t pick or peel! Drinks lots of cold water, and keep blisters clean so they don’t get infected.

Your tropical paradise getaway is ruined by torrential downpours. Before you go: Pack a deck of cards, and load your video iPod with a new movie or two. The fix: Head to the hotel’s bar or restaurant and bust out the cards and iPod. Odds are you’re not the only traveler ruing the lousy weather. Pretty soon, you’ll be the life of the party.

You missed your flight - which connects to a cruise ready to sail. Before you go: Avoid scheduling lunchtime or afternoon flights - those tend to run late. The earliest flights out, the better. The fix: Call the airline, tell them you’re running late, and ask if you can switch to another flight, even one with a connection if it gets you to your destination to catch your next connection. Offer to fly out of another airport if you’re in an area with several. Then call the cruise line immediately for guidance.

Ummm, an ipod with a 2 inch screen and a deck of cards will make you the life of the party? LOSER! Getting drunk at the bar would give you a better chance of being the life of the party, LOL. I think any of these suggestions will really help if your vacation is ruined. Being open minded and having a Plan B will help more.

These suggestions are all very good. Go to the website for the Transportation Security Administration (www.tsa.gov) before you go for advice on packing and if there's any travel advisories in that area. I would like to add also that it's smart to book your vacation with a travel agent. They sometimes have contacts who can rebook you on another airline so you don't miss your cruise or help out when things go wrong. You might have saved $100 booking that Jamaica package on cheapvacations.com but good luck trying to talk to someone when something goes wrong. Most travel agencies even have emergency contact numbers so you can get advice even if it's after hours. Also, don't let 1 or 2 problems spoil your whole vacation. I have had clients (yes, I'm a travel agent) who let ants in their hotel room spoil their whole vacation. One gentleman was angry because his all-inclusive resort didn't carry his brand of beer so it wrecked his whole $2500 vacation.

Be prepared for the unexpected and don't let the little things make you crazy. Remember, vacations are supposed to be fun!!

PS Don't put your home address on your luggage tags. Use your work address and phone or that of your travel agency. Also, put contact information inside your bags so if the luggage tag breaks off, the airline knows who it belongs to.

Rofl April, getting drunk? Really? That's your best move?

Let me guess, you have no idea how to play cards.

Yeah, hitting the hotel bar doesn't get it for me. How about renting a car, if you haven't already done so, and hitting a museum, shopping or just go sight seeing.

I spent the first night of my honeymoon in a hotel with no power or water, waiting for our cruise line to stop telling us to try to make it onto Galveston Island during hurricane ike. So this list of worst case scenarios is.....laughable. But we made the best of it, and spent our two weeks off driving around Texas with no plans. It was fun, and we got our money back for the cruise.

We went on a camping vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine a few years ago and it just RAINED AND RAINED for the whole week, with a thick fog enveloping the entire area. The sun came out the day that we left! As it was a camping vacation, I knew we would be roughing it, but I wasn't thinking that our campsite would turn into one huge mud puddle. I learned to laugh about it around Day 2.5, and we went cycling in the rain, hiking in the rain, etc.

What's the problem with putting your address on your luggage. I work for a very large hospital I can't see putting there address on my luggage.

Darleneb dear, you do not want to put your home address on your luggage and point the way for the burglary crew to hit your house while you're gone and have all the time in the world to completely clean you out.

That said, the best advice I have is plan like crazy and then just wing it - vacations are much more fun that way. As a child, my family was on a strict time-table for every vacation, we had to see everything or else. Not a lot of fun for a kid, and I imagine not fun for the adults either.

The best vacations happen when things are not planned to the minute. I've taken quite a few "tours" and usually skip most of the group events, tour bus rides, etc. to just disappear into the city I'm visiting. In this way you can experience the real flavor of the place.
