The latest beauty pageant news is making us (thankfully) forget all about Carrie Prejean: A pageant planned for Cambodian landmine victims has been canceled. Similar pageants have been held in Angola, the organization says it's designed to celebrate "true beauty" and "female and disabled pride and empowerment," and the contest winners were to receive custom-made prosthetic limbs. But the Cambodian government decided it would be offensive to those with disabilities. When Baze and I were hanging at my apartment Saturday, we happened upon the live broadcast of the Miss America pageant. I hadn't watched the pageant in years, but as a little girl, I'd get so into it that I'd get all teary-eyed when the winner was laden down with her enormous victory crown and bouquet of red roses. Instead of feeling nostalgic when watching it this time, though, I mostly just sat with my jaw dropped in disbelief. The whole thing just felt so...antiquated.
